The portion of the River Hooghly which separates the Port of Calcutta from the sou contains a number of bars on which the depths of water vary from time to tim These bar are crossed a near high water and an exuri reply to the questions would therefore give no useful infor mation. The deepest draught Vessel that has up to the present navigated the Hooghly drew 29 ft. 3 ins., but it may be mentioned that wherrak smaller vessels occupy only about hours in steaning down the river the delays to vessels of deep draught (f... 25 ft. and over) amount on an average to 12 hours and sometimes much more.

The length of quays with a depth of 33 ft.
(L.W.O.S.T.) is at present 1,200 ft. There is wharfage accommodation in addition to the above some 5,000 ft, in length with from 22 to 30 ft. depth of water alongside (L.W.O.S.T.). This is in course of reconstruction to provide minimum depth of 33 ft. of water (L.W.O.S.T.).
In addition to the reconstruction of the masin wharves, a tidal basin or wet dock has been constructed 24 acres in extent, with depth of 30 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.) which provides a further 3,800 ft. of berthing accommodation.
Quay space is also being provided for amali vessels in the harbour, 4,139 ft. long, with a depth alongside of 18 ft. (L.W.0.S.T.).
